This week Mr. Norman introduced several classes to virtual reality. FISD obtained these viewers last Spring through funding provided by the Legends of Friendswood . In second grade students were studying states of matter. The viewers were used to explore a volcano and observe multiple states of matter. In first grade students observed animals in their habitats. We are very excited to have these viewers on campus and provide our students the opportunity to take the curriculum to the next level. The viewers will be on our campus for a short period of time and then will be rotated to other campuses in the district. In addition to the virtual reality viewers Mr. Norman was also visiting classrooms and showing students how to get their SeeSaw accounts set up and make their first posts. If your child's teacher has sent home a QR code for this program please download it, you will love being able to get updates throughout the week of what your child is learning in class. There are so many great lessons that don't come home on a worksheet and we have found this to be an excellent tool to allow students to share their learning with friends and family. Mr. Norman is the campus iCoach for Cline and Windsong. His role is to assist teachers with instructional technology. You can follow him on Twitter at @JNorman04

This week we are reminded that we have so much to be thankful for! The beginning of the week kicked off with Patriot Day and ended with the celebration of Constitution Day. Students studied the importance and history of both of these special holidays. Our first grade students walked the hallways on Friday afternoon and led a Freedom Parade. We were also honored to receive a special package this week. A group of students from Trailblazer Elementary in Colorado Springs, Colorado, sent some very sweet and thoughtful letters to us. As each class rotates through the library I will be sharing these heartfelt letters with them.
Thank you, thank you Welcome to the 2017- 2018 school year!
We have made it through the first 8 days of school and already so much has happened! All students have been to the library (as well as the other specials classes). They are such a great group of students! I know we are going to have a fantastic year. Their strength and resiliency will shine through and carry them forward. A few highlights from the beginning of school: Parent night was a huge success- thank you to everyone who was able to attend! PTO hosted a fantastic back to school luncheon for teachers and then a wonderful breakfast for teachers when we came back after hurricane Harvey. Our Administrators went into every classroom and read one of the bucket filling books. We are a bucket filling campus, essentially the premise of the books is that we build each other up not tear each other down. Eclipse- Second and third grade students viewed it from outside and Kindergarten and First grade students viewed via a live stream in their classroom. Hurricane Harvey- We are all back at school and we will hold each other up as we continue to recover from the devastation that was left behind. Third grade students started to checkout! Other grades will begin a week or so. Kindergarten will probably begin several weeks from now. Here are few pictures from the first days of school: Cline students were treated to special performances by the Friendswood Highschool Theater department. They put on a Bucket Filler play that incorporated many of the songs that our students have learned over the past few years. The central theme of the play was to be a bucket filler and not a bucket dipper. Cline students have been taught by their teachers and the school adminstrators what it means to be a bucket filler. We value each other's differences and we will stand up for each other. I am so proud that our students were able to see these older students be role models. Book Fair is going on now.
Online shopping runs from Nov. 18 - Dec. 5. You can shop by clicking this link below. Students and parents may purchase book in the library Nov. 28 - Dec. 2. The Book Fair hours are from 7:30 - 3:00. Students will be making a wish list and bringing it home to share with their families. Every year in October we talk with our students about the importance of being good digital citizens. We know that curating good digital citizens is vital to their future successes. At each grade level we focused on specific aspects of being a good digital citizen. These conversations will continue through out the school year as we continue to provide our students with opportunities to demonstrate digital citizenship. In Kindergarten, we focused on going places safely online. The emphasis with students was to make sure to always ask for permission before getting on a device, only talk to people they know and make sure that they are always visiting a 'just right' place for them. In First grade, we focused on their digital footprint. All First grade students will be piloting a program called SeeSaw. This app will allow them to share information (projects and school activities) with a specific audience. More information about this program will be sent home in the future. We spent our time discussing what types of things are appropriate to share online. Our Second and Third grade students focused on passwords. We discussed why passwords are necessary, who they should be shared with and how to create a secure password. In addition, we reviewed what it means to be a good digital citizen in general. Many of the lessons and resources we used came from Common Sense Media. In 2016 our school was named a Common Sense Media certified school. What is Dot Day?
The first week of school has come and gone and we couldn't be happier with the start of the 2016-2017 school year!
